Holistic Clinical Aromatherapy

The word holistic is derived from the Greek 'holos' meaning whole. Holistic Clinical Aromatherapy uses essential oils to help generate healing in the whole body. It works on three levels; body, mind and spirit. This combination of essential oils with massage is a deeply pleasurable and nurturing experience, as well as being an effective way of healing that can be beneficial to everyone.

Essential oils are fragrant volatile liquids that occur naturally in plants. They are extracted from the different plant parts; flowers, leaves, roots, bark and fruits. The oils are the 'essence' of that particular plant and are responsible for giving the plant its unique scent.

Through aromatherapy and using the essential oils, we can improve both our physical and emotional health. Esssential oils can be absorbed through the skin, making massage a very effective way of introducing them into the body.

Each essential oil has its own distinctive profile and therapeutic and energetic properties. They are chosen to work in synergy with the presenting requirements of the individual as a whole.

Essential Oils

Essential oils have been around and used in healing since ancient times. These plant essences are found in different parts of the plant: the leaves (eucalyptus and geranium), the roots (ginger and vetiver), heartwood (sandalwood), resin (frankincense and myrrh), fruit peel (bergamot and orange. and the petals (rose). Often referred to as the 'life force' of plants, these oils contain the unique, complex properties and constituents of that plant in a highly concentrated form, that can help the body to heal itself.

Scientific research has shown that all essential oils have anti-bacterial, anti-viral or anti-fungal properties. More research has also shown that aroma affects our emotional senses. This is because the olfactory nerves in our noses are directly connected to the limbic system – the centre of instinct and emotion in the brain.
